08 Development of Idea

1&2. Mind map/Video Discussion Notes

Who: I will aim my media product at 16 to 20 year olds. The shorter video will be presented by me and the longer one will be me and Carter.

What: My idea will consist of me posting a short recommendation video lasting no more than five minutes and not exposing any of the key plot points but giving a score out of ten, possibly stating if certain episodes are slow or slightly boring near the start of the show. I will then release a second video which is around twelve minuets where another presenter who has seen the show and I review the series in more depth and explain endings or things that may be confusing to some viewers, talk about characters and what we think of the season as a whole.

Why: I see a gap in the TV show review market specifically Netflix original TV shows, because my idea will be different and more effective than others that I have seen on YouTube etc. As other review videos I have seen don't vary the number of presenters, the lengths of their videos or the content. They do a single video on the topic of a certain series before moving on, so I think that because I have varied mine this will appeal to a lot of people weather they watch both videos or just the one they think better suits them if for example they have already seen the show they don't need to watch the recommendation video but they may be drawn to the review.

Where: I will post all my reviews on the YouTube media platform.

4. List of Catchphrases
Opening: What’s up guys (introduce presenters) from Archie's reviews here, bringing you another recommendation/review of (the new, our favourite, the long anticipated) Netflix TV show (name of show).
Closing: Thank you for watching, catch you later.

09 Creative Brief for New Digital Media Product/Service

VIDEO PRODUCTION CREATIVE BRIEF

Project Name: Film/TV Review product
Brand: Archie's Reviews
Product: Review podcast related to film and TV

Project
Purpose
To fill a gap that I see in the market of TV show reviewing videos are either too long or too short, I don’t yet feel like there is a channel that is a perfect blend of to the point recommendations and more insightful reviewing.
Schedule
Projected Timeline
I aim to have a few videos a week enough to capture a fan base but not to many as to keep realistic as well as consistent.
Important dates/ deadlines
Friday is an important day for a video or podcast to be released as many people look to entertainment sites during the weekends.
Budget
Amount
This will be a very low budget production the maximum budget will be £20. As we already have access to recording equipment and a quiet room to record in.
Additional Financial projections
It is possible that some more advanced equipment may be required to improve the quality of the product like a better sound recording device, editing software etc. To possibly make it more engaging
Target Audience
Project Target
The target audience I want to reach is people that are interested in film and television in their late teens to late 20’s. The most likely areas where my videos will be watched are in the UK and US as the primary language is English they will properly be in the most populated areas like cities where films etc. are advertised.
Brand Target
The people who are slightly pushed for time and want quick concise answers with some analysis while not being too much like an lecture and more like a conversation. I think that this will appeal to my target audience as they will probably be in education so a lecture essay type video may bore them whereas a light-hearted video would capture their attention.
Desired Reaction
Getting involved with the creators and offering opinions of what content to post next, this way the channel will stay relevant to the people that watch it and will be able to review TV shows that the viewers are actually interested in.
Attitude
Brand Personality
I want the presenters of the show to create a light-hearted, fun atmosphere, that gets to the point quickly so the audience doesn’t feel like their time has been wasted.
Deployment
YouTube should be the ideal site to post on as it is widely used by people of all ages especially the target audience previously mentioned. It is also easy and free to upload to however, there are many precautions in place to stop copyright which will need to be avoided as to avoid copyright strikes and videos getting taken down.
Resources
Content
There is already a logo to go with the brand name as well as parts of a script for introductions and outros. The rest of the show will be unscripted as to make it seem more 'chilled out'.
Equipment
This project will require a microphone or sound recording equipment of some kind as well as a device with editing software and access to the internet so videos can be uploaded.

10 Evatuating the Impact of Enterprise Skills in Researching, Developing Ideas and Producing a Brief

Evaluation

Posts 2-7

In the blog posts relating to research I applied the skills of teamwork, working independently and using interpersonal communications.
In the beginning to generate ideas for my product I worked in a small group because then I was able to ask their opinion of my initial ideas as soon as I thought of them. also I was able to more quickly discover weather or not my idea had already been done by another creator. Later on I worked individually to develop my idea further in primary and secondary research. Primary research consisted of me gathering a small group made up of my target market and asking them various questions about lengths of videos and the general format of the video as well as a basic schedule for the product to be released. This was effective as I now know the amount of material I require to fill the duration of the video, I will not waste time creating more content than the viewer will watch (I found the maximum watch time for most people in my focus group was twelve minuets) and I will insure I have enough to make the video interesting throughout.

Post 8

After looking further into how my product will become a reality I completed an interview in order to complete blog post eight, this was useful to solidify my ideas for the product with someone of my target audience. I changed some ideas in response to my research so I was glad that in my interview I was able to check these changes to see if they were preferred to my original idea of only posting one review video however I changed this after my focus group to a short recommendation video followed by a more in depth review video.

Post 9

I had to do further research into creative briefs in order to make mine look as professional as possible, this required me to use my initiative to select a suitable template to use for my creative brief using a template was the best way to insure I covered all of the points and aspects of the task. To an extent I also had to use problem solving skills as many of the templates and examples were not related to TV and film production so would not be suitable for me to use.

07 Market Research

Finding a Gap in the Market

Some videos that have done secondary research on don't cover all aspects of what I as well as my focus group think is essential for a quality podcast/YouTube video. They either have a longer review video where they talk about the show in depth but it can get boring as they are by themselves and the video goes on for 15 minutes or they do a short video in more like a recommendation but then the viewer loses out on the proper review of the show. The only TV show reviews I can find weather they are longer or short have a single presenter which does have its benefits; for example the point the reviewer is trying to make can come across in a more concise way also the viewer can feel as though they have a better connection/understanding of the creator if there is only one.

Assessing Viability of  New Media Products/Services

My idea will consist of me posting a short recommendation video lasting no more than five minuets and not exposing any of the key plot points but giving a score out of ten, possibly stating if certain episodes are slow or slightly boring near the start of the show. I will then release a second video which is around twelve minuets where another presenter who has seen the show and I review the series in more depth and explain endings or things that may be confusing to some viewers, talk about characters and what we think of the season as a whole. This combination will attract an audience that is already interested in review shows as well as those who are just starting out.

Finding a Gap in the Market

I see a gap in the TV show review market specifically Netflix original TV shows, because my idea will be different and more effective than others that I have seen on YouTube etc.

What I Discovered

I learnt that the demographic of people I am aiming my project at 16-20 year olds, both male and female, at school/work. The psychographic factors are they are interested in Film specifically Netflix TV shows, enjoys watching YouTube, values the opinions of people of a similar age. They said usually watch YouTube videos for up to twelve minuets before clicking off of the video, even if the topic interests them. They put a large value on the quality on how the video is presented, I gave them three options the first was a short video briefly recommending the TV show, a more in depth review of the show explaining major plot points etc, or both in single or separate videos.
They cohesively chose the separate video option, also stating that they would be inclined to return for the in depth review of the show if they were previously recommended to the TV show by my recommendation video. Some of the questions I asked in the focus group related to the presenters of the videos, they said that they would like one presenter in the brief recommendation video as they wanted this to be quick no longer than five minuets, but in the review they thought it better to have two or three presenters so the video can go on for longer while still being interesting and also meaning that it is more like a conversation than me just talking to the camera. I also agree with these ideas, I found in my secondary research that one presenter was interesting enough for up to five minutes but after that an additional presenter is required.

What I Will Do As A Result Of My Findings

I will make sure to release my first video briefly recommending a certain show, having it no longer than five minuets, I will then rate the show and say if it is worth watching also including episodes that may seem boring or slow in the start of the show and explaining that the are necessary etc.
I will then follow up this video with a second related to the same TV show which will consist of me and another presenter that has seen the film reviewing it properly referring to important plot points and aspects of the show that are particularly interesting. As well as explaining things that may have seemed unclear by the end of the story, this will be around 10-15 minuets long.

05 Secondary Research To Generate Ideas For Media Product Or Service

 Internet Study 1:

Part of my research into film criticism comes from the website "Study.com" and from a blog called "Become a Film Critic: Education and Career Roadmap"

It states that due to the success of some of the largest film review sites like IMDB and rotten tomatoes a lot of people rely on the scores that films attain to tell them if they are worth watching. As well as this they look to the opinions of professional film critics like Mark Kermode to give their opinions. This links to point two of the article which says the an important aspect of being a good film critic comes from an in depth knowledge of films as a whole, as people trust the opinions of a professional or at least someone who seems like they know what they're talking about. It also says that audiences or readers also like to have a contrast/comparison between the film that is being reviewed and one that is similar or by the same director, this can further recommend them to the film, as if they liked the work from a certain director then they might like the new films they have released. With this information I have made a conscious decision to insure that in my podcast I evaluate the TV show that I am watching comparing it to others that are similar in some way.

Newspaper Study 2:

The next part of my primary research is from an article in the Guardian newspaper called  "What every film critic must know"

The article makes a point of mentioning that an editor said that an aspiring film critic couldn't take the role of the retired critic he had been shadowing as he "knew too much about cinema", however the writer of this article includes an extensive list of films and film techniques that he says are required for someone to consider themselves a professional film critic. The wisdom I took from this is that I should include some film terminology etc. But not too much to keep it relatable to the average film goer who is not well versed in film language and has not taken a course at school.

04 Primary Reserch to Generate Ideas for a Media Product or Service

My Product

My product will be a podcast reviewing/recommending Netflix original tv shows available on Podbean and Youtube: explaining weather or not they are worth watching as some of them are quite long these will include shows like: YOU, the Haunting of Hill House. It will be a simple quick review not too in depth and I will try to reveal as minimal plot points as possible so it is still worth them watching after watching the review. It will be aimed at 16-20 year olds due to most of the shows having scenes with extensive violence, sex and adult themes.
I will also have a follow up episode where I properly review the show with someone else that has seen it noting the best episodes, actors and our favoured parts.

Theses are the links for my primary research methods.

03 Understanding New Digital Media Services

Providing Digital Training Skills to a New Group-Google Digital Garage:

All courses are free, which is ideal because it is aimed at people who are looking to boost their CV before applying for a job so eighteen to twenty-five year olds that have an interest in carriers that involve computer based skills like business, marketing and design. The courses teach a variety of skills from storytelling and design to the fundamentals of digital marketing. The main advantage of Google digital garage is that the courses are free and they don't have to take long periods of time to complete they can be as short as one hour. The courses are also certified which means they are worth doing and you are able to show your achievements to a potential employer in the form of a certificate, it is also easy to start this course as there is no sign up, payment or proof of age required.

Providing an Analogue to Digital Transfer Service to a New Client-Audio Restored:

It is a business that digitalises a variety of old audio products from the 70's like vinyl, tape and shellac. The prises for these transfers are quite cheap most are around £40 however some can be up to £100, this is for the largest and rarest reels to reel transfers. The business its self is unique as well as its reel to reel transfer service there are not many businesses that can transfer the variety of audio products to digital files as at Audio Restored. The service is aimed at people that have an interest in vintage audio equipment and have an old unusable product that they want to be restored or a digital copy of it for sound editing or ease of listening to it on a mobile instead of a large reel or having to bring a cassette player around with you to play a tape. This is properly often older men who bought the equipment when it was brand new and have kept it but it has been damaged or is too difficult to play on the analogue devices that are required to play tapes, reels etc.

02 Understanding New Digital Media Products

Mobile app- Instagram:

It was started on 6/10/10, it has 800 million users worldwide
The app is a photo/short video sharing app where people can create personal or business accounts and share pictures of their lives, Accounts that you like can be followed which means that their most recent posts will show up in your feed where you can like and comment on them, this is the same for a newer feature called stories this is similar to a post but only stays for up for a maximum of twenty-four hours, if you like the story format but want to keep that story on your profile without having to post a picture or video then another way it can be saved is in the highlights. The direct message . This app is better than others like it, as the layout is more clear also messaging features are included in the app it doesn't require an additional app like Facebook does.

Website- YouTube:

Set-up day14/02/05, Number of users: 1,300,000,000-A website where channels can be created by anyone and post videos about what they are passionate about, people who watch them can subscribe to the channel and 'like' the videos. This app is better than the others that are similar to it because of the regular updates to the algorithm, that mean the channels you have subscribed to have their most recent videos show up on your feed, also other videos that are related to ones you often watch are recommended as well as this the trending section shows the most popular videos of the last few days. There are also prises for the creators when they attain a large number of subscribers.

Podcast- Kermode and Mayo's film review:

It was started in 2001, Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo review the latest films of the week on a Friday afternoon 2pm to 4pm. What makes this better than other film review sites is that Mark

Kermode is a professional and renowned film critic so his opinion is valued more than most, he also words it in a way that is accessible to the average person not just people familiar with film jargon. The show is described as the BBC's flagship film programme, this could be due to the fact that there are always at least two people reviewing the films with occasional celebrity actor guests  There are also special versions of the show that air for new years and Christmas, they include the film of the year where Mark and Simon decide their favourite film from the year.

YouTube channels-Fitness Blender:

Subscriber count 5,400,000 Started on 01/19/10 It shows a variety of physical exercises and workouts that people can copy to get fitter and stronger. The unique features are that not only do they show exercises to lose weight but also nutrition plans and the right food to eat to achieve your goals also how to prepare them. This channel is better than others that I have seen because there are two people involved in the creation of content one male and one female, this is ideal for both men and women who watch the videos because there is something they can do that suits them. In other fitness channels they only focus on one gender, this is inferior as by doing it the way the Fitness blender has they help more people as well as grow a larger fan base.

01 Enterprise Skills

Enterprise Skills

Using initiative:

I used initiative when I visited a variety of collage open days to insure that I made the correct decision on where I would attend as well as the courses that I would do.

Working independently: I was required to work independently in a lifeguard course final exam, where I had to react to a random situation created by the examiner and apply the correct first aid to the "casualty" quickly.

Applying self-motivation to perform tasks:

I had to motivate myself during and in the months leading up to exam season to revise and prepare myself as best I could, even staying after school to finish coursework or attend revision sessions this also applied in the holidays not just in the school term.

Self-evaluating ability to meet deadlines:

In a DT course I used this skill extensively because after I would assemble a new piece of the non-powered speaker I had to design and make, I had to assess myself to see if it would be of high enough quality to be part of the final product. This assessment also had to be completed within a strict timeframe as I had weekly deadlines to meet as to not fall behind on the course as a whole.

Working with others, delegating, compromising:

During the lifeguard course final exam a situation was given by the examiner to remove a casualty with a spinal injury safely from the pool, this requires a team of four, I was selected to be the first to enter the pool so communication with the other members of my team was my responsibility, in order for the casualty to be removed safely each member has to move at exactly the right time otherwise the casualty could be injured further.

Applying communication, interpersonal, written communications:

I used written as well as verbal communications when applying for collage places as well as the NCS and lifeguard courses.

Problem solving:

On the NCS summer programme I as well as my team had to use problem solving skills when given a task such as assembling a raft, we had to find out the best and most effective way to fasten the materials supplied to us into something that could make it to the other side of a small pond.
